What is Managed Services?

When a business has a server they require looking after (Administration, Maintenance and Support) tasks or requires a server in the cloud that is managed for them this is managed services, from email servers to active directory infrastructure they have all become an important part in today’s modern workplace.

Server

Servers are computers on private local area networks or LAN’s and the internet alike, they are configured to be continuously on with high amounts of RAM and CPU processing power to deliver the services they are setup for like email, database or web pages and so on in multi user environments.

Router

This is a device that is used to connect networks together and control the traffic or routes in and out of a network for network traffic, the traffic is made up of packets of information that the router puts onto the correct path / route for the data packets to get closer to their destination and so on, until they reach the router that controls the paths to that network, their it eventually is passed on to the destination server.

Network

A network is a connection of computers that can communicate with each other, the more common networks today are Ethernet running on media of cat5 terminated with RJ45, but this is not the only type of networks for instance token ring and FDDI and so on all with their own pro’s and con’s but most business will use the Ethernet type of LAN.

Hub

The is a device used to connect computers and groups of computers together
This is a device used to connect computers and LAN segments together, it is like a central point were data is either shared to other computers on the subnet or passed across hubs on the LAN to connect to the router to pass information across the wider network or internet.
